Human Resources Generalist

averhealth is recruiting a Human Resources Generalist to assist its growing employee base with covering payroll, benefits, employee relations, and recruitment needs. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in payroll (possibly as a payroll specialist) and benefits with some employee relations exposure preferred.

This position is based in averhealth’s Richmond office and will join a team of three human resources professionals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Payroll (50%) – Processing averhealth’s biweekly payroll, completing ad-hoc payroll payments like bonuses and relocation, auditing payroll cycle for accuracy, auditing and reconciling payroll taxes, partnering with the accounting team to process accurate transfers and deductions for benefits which will include medical, dental, vision, health savings accounts, and 401k.
  • Benefits (20%) – Completing initial enrollments and averhealth’s annual open enrollment. Helping employees with troubleshooting issues. Completing 401k enrollments and terminations. Submitting invoices for payment. Assisting employees with leaves of absence. Auditing benefit enrollments for accuracy and correcting errors.
  • Employee Relations (20%) – Reviewing employee concerns, conducting investigations, partnering with leaders to address performance issues, implementing progressive discipline and terminations, responding to unemployment claims and participating in unemployment hearings, conducting exit interviews and employee surveys.
  • Recruitment (10%) – Posting positions as needed. Conducting phone screens and onsite interviews for various positions.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Advanced knowledge of federal and state employment law as well as payroll best practices
  • Proficient in the use of HR software and technology to include web-based HRIS, applicant tracking systems, etc.
  • Excellent attention to detail, auditing, and process improvement skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to engage in active listening
  • Advanced critical thinking skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Strong presentation skills
  • Skilled in the use of computers, especially applications such as Microsoft Office, Asana, and Teamwork Desk


  • Bachelor’s degree in business, human resources management, psychology, or related field required.
  • Three years of experience with payroll responsibilities required.
  • Prior experience using ADP Workforce Now for HRIS and payroll responsibilities strongly preferred.
  • PHR, SHRM-CP, CEBS, or CPP certifications preferred.
  • Prior experience with conducting investigations and coaching leaders through performance management best practices preferred.
  • Prior experience managing projects and general HR compliance needs preferred.
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in Excel preferred.

  • 10% travel by car, plane, or train. Travel may include in-state and out-of-state trips.
